Finding Creative Money for Your Business
Show me the heart
I get asked about this all the time! With a background in the world of finance and the world of nonprofits (including a year spent managing a grant program), I am uniquely qualified to help you out with this. What is THIS, you ask? Well, funding of course.
The reality is businesses need money to stay in business. Ideally that money comes from sales but there comes a time for many businesses where we need to explore some creative cash flow options.
Diving into the world of funding can feel like uncharted territory, but guess what? You've got more options than you might think – from grants and loans to scholarships, sponsorships, and even investors. The secret sauce to unlocking these opportunities? A killer business plan that speaks to not just the nuts and bolts of your biz but also its heart and soul.
Keep in mind, not all business plans fully capture the essence of your business's vision and audience but I urge you to not skip those pieces. The story and big-picture components of your business often capture the interest of investors or grant committees even more than the details of your business model, marketing strategy, and competitive analysis.
Now, I get it – the thought of crafting a business plan that captures your vision and vibe might seem daunting. Honestly, just trying to create ANY kind of business plan can feel a bit overwhelming. No worries though – I've got you covered.

It's designed with you in mind, focusing on those big-picture components that really draw in investors or grant committees. Okay, got it? Now onward to the next big hurdle.
Seeking Funding? Start Local.
Okay, let’s say you are ready to get funding but you don’t know where to look. My golden rule for finding funding is to start local. Why? Because local organizations love supporting businesses that boost the local economy. And hey, if you're in Alaska like me, there are some pretty cool options to explore, like grants from the MEA (Matanuska Electric Association) and MTA (Matanuska Telephone Association), or even continuing education funds from the Mat-Su Health Foundation for those in health and wellness industries.
But don't stop there – zoom out and explore what your city's Chamber of Commerce, your state's funding platforms, or even check out what national entities like the SBA have to offer. Or, if crowdfunding is more your style, Kickstarter and GoFundMe could be your alley, especially if you're no stranger to marketing and self-promotion. And for those eyeing investors, give the Angel Investors Network a peek.
Whether you're mapping out your business plan, scouting for grants, or networking for investors, remember – there's a whole world of funding possibilities out there. With a dash of strategy, a sprinkle of research, and a whole lot of heart, you're well on your way to turning those business dreams into reality. And hey, if the thought of tackling that business plan has you breaking out in a sweat, reach out to me. I am a business coach after all. Let's make your business not just survive, but thrive!
